Issue #22

April thoughts

It’s been a little while since I shared an update here.

Why?

Well, I’ve been moving house and have been busy with client work.

6 days a week kind of busy (first time I’ve ever worked weekends on client projects).

But now that I’ve moved house and have wrapped up a couple of projects, I want to share more content again.

It’s been an interesting few months as I’ve exclusively worked with 2 agencies.

Most of my time being taken up with a branding agency who do some incredible design work.

In short, I did development on 2 projects, and it seems I made a great impression with them and their clients.

But.

It was hard work managing 2 agency clients.

Mainly because agencies tend to want all your time (as clients want stuff ASAP).

And if I’m being honest, I felt a bit squeezed on these projects.

It was great to see how quickly I could push out a project to a great standard, but it left zero room for any hiccups.

So now that I’m getting some time back, I want to focus on the following for the next couple of months:

  • Website refresh
  • Start YouTube

Website refresh

I’ve not really updated my website in well over a year.

At least not the homepage (and let’s not talk about case studies).

I’m not fully sure about the updates yet, as I need to position myself correctly.

But I don’t want to overcomplicate it.

So I’ll share more updates on this next month.

Start YouTube

With the house move and a busy work schedule, I’ve not had a chance to start null YouTube.

So first thing on my agenda is to come up with content ideas.

I’m going to try and avoid the perfection trap as I need to accept things aren’t going to be perfect in the beginning.

Funnily enough, someone left a comment on my only YouTube video from last year saying:

"Just wanted to say that I’d love for you to keep on doing some content, I know I’d appreciate it since I’m looking into being a freelancer as you are. Keep the videos coming, there’s definitely an audience for them”

So I’ll take that as a sign.

New project launch

Big Cartel underwent a rebrand with How&How. Part of that meant updating their marketing site (their primary sales tool). I was the sole developer on this project, migrating from Contentful to Prismic.

Product of the month

Mr Marvis

Harrington jacket

For those who appreciate classic menswear. This is more about rewarding your hard work. I’ve wanted to replace a jacket I’ve worn for 10 years – but couldn’t find anything I liked until this.

Book of the month

Simon Squibb

What’s your dream?

Not too dissimilar to other self-help books. Maybe helpful as motivation but 6 chapters in and it feels like not much has been said other than you should have a dream.
